It doesn't boot at all with the -07 ROMs, and you can NOT even get the boot menu to come up (this is true for both 1.3 and 2.04). I pulled all expansion boards out of my A2000 except for the A2620, booted from floppy, and it still did NOT boot. When I put the old -02 ROMs back in after upgrading to 2.04, I was able to bring up the boot menu, select 68000 mode, and successfully bring up the machine under 2.04 (obviously since it is not using the A2620). Of course if I selected 68020 under the old ROMs, the screen would go blank for a second and then bring the boot menu back up again. My assessment is that there is some kind of incompatibility strictly between the A2620 Rev. 3 board and the new ROMs which is completely independent of the operating system revision or the A2000 configuration. Hope this helps - I went ahead and traded mine in for the GVP, although I haven't received it yet. Yes, I replaced my 1.3 ROM (actually put a switch in and piggy-backed the 1.3 and 2.04 ROMs so I could boot up either). I used the "copy 2.04 Kickstart to a file" program and ran 2.04 that way which worked ok. I was when I got the A2620 ROMs that I had problems... >has seen this happen, I would be interesting in the following: > >- OK, we know A2620 with Rev 01 or thereabouts ROMs won't run from ROM 2.04. > Will the A2620 with Rev 07 ROMs run 1.3? I'm not sure now but I don't think so. I was dead in the water when I put the -07 ROMs in. > >- If you're failing, what's failing? Does the system boot at all? Can you > get the boot menu and fire up the 68000? > No. No boot by holding down mouse buttons or anything. The only way it did come up was when I thought the ROMs might be mis-labeled and so I switched them. I thought that was the problem because the 2000 came up ok. Then I found out it that the code must have been so incorrect by then that the 2000 ignored the A2620 all together. I could only boot into 68000 mode. The machine didn't even know the A2620 was there. >- Does it boot if you remove all your expansion cards? What expanision cards > are you using, anyway? > It did not seem to have to do with the expansion cards since I tried removing all of them. I have a MicroBotics 8UP ram board (2Megs), HardFrame, and a A2286 Bridgeboard. >>When they didn't work the "Hut" told me that if I send them back the tab -07 >>ROMs, my A2620 and $200 I would get the above metioned GVP accelerator. > >That's a 22MHz(?) If that's the case, I would call it a damn >good upgrade offer, regardless of whether your A2620 works or not. > Yea, I thought so. So for me the A2620 problem is moot - since I now have the GVP board in hand. Yep, DMA SCSI, room for total of 13 Megs of 32-bit ram, and the 68030 22Mhz with 68882 22Mhz. Of course now I have a whole new "lot" of factors to deal with... ;-) > >Obviously something is going wrong. When you're changing several pieces of >a system like this, things sometimes do interact in new and interesting ways. Yea I understand. I didn't pursue the problem any farther once I heard of the "trade-up". I would have been happy with a A2620 that worked but this was just fine too! An A2630 would have been a better "upgrade" for Commodore's name's sake. Software Hut said that this deal was something Commodore and them were into together so I kind of wondered why a second party rather than Commodore's own stuff. I'm not complaining since I got a faster processor, plus a SCSI and Ram board all in one! >Dave Haynie Commodore-Amiga (Amiga 3000) "The Crew That Never Rests" > {uunet|pyramid|rutgers}!cbmvax!daveh BIX: hazy > "I used to be disgusted, now I try to be amused" - Elvis Costello > I hope this info helps a bit. -Guy Relay-Version: version B 2.10.3 4.3bsd-beta 6/6/85; site cbmvax.commodore.com Path: cbmvax!rutgers!uwm.edu!wupost!uunet!sybus.sybus.com!myrddin!tct!psycho!f20.n3603.z1.FIDONET.ORG!brianh From: brianh@f20.n3603.z1.FIDONET.ORG (Brian Heyboer) Newsgroups: comp.sys.amiga.hardware Subject: Re: 2620 & 2.04 Message-ID: <42674.298054CC@psycho.fidonet.org> Date: 23 Jan 92 22:56:01 GMT Date-Received: 26 Jan 92 07:57:43 GMT Sender: ufgate@psycho.fidonet.org (newsout1.24) Organization: FidoNet node 1:3603/20 Lines: 35 DAVE, In a message dated 01-22-92 daveh@cbmvax.commodore.com (Dave Haynie) wrote: > We (probably me, mainly) are going to try and look into what might be the > problem. I had this problem INITIALLY, and found I needed to remove the 2620, allow my hard drive to validate under 2.04, then reinstall the 2620. I probably could have selected boot from 68000 and not removed the 2620 is I had known at that time that the processor selection menu was moved to the right mouse button. My SCSI host adapter is a Supra, which may or may not have anything todo with this. -- Internet: brianh@f20.n3603.z1.FIDONET.ORG UUCP: ...!uunet!ndcc!tct!psycho!20!brianh Note:psycho is a free gateway between Usenet & Fidonet.
